Computing info

I primarily use the Debian GNU/Linux operating system on a variety of computers such as my IBM ThinkPad 755CX and T60 laptops and Dell OptiPlex 5050 desktop. I use the FreeBSD operating system on my Dell PowerEdge T320 server and a second Dell OptiPlex 5050 desktop.

I mainly use a text console for convenience, but I will occasionally use TWM or MATÉ (why the accent), along with other graphical interfaces if installed on the computer I am using.

Some of my most used programs are CVS(1), EMACS(1), Mutt(1), and of course, TELNET(1) and SSH(1).

My web pages are typically maintained directly on this machine rather than remotely. Pages are also typically written manually in HTML. Some pages have CSS, such as those shared from other people or ones that were generated from TexInfo or LaTeX, but I think most of them look better without any custom styles.

I read my emails on this machine using Mutt. I do not have much experience with most other email client programs apart from Mutt, Alpine, Thunderbird, and now ancient versions of Microsoft Outlook that would be too much of a security risk to use these days anyways.

I have several web browsers that I use, typically with JavaScripts blocked unless absolutely necessary. I continue to exhort web site developers to license JavaScript code under a free license, such as the GNU (A)GPL. No (client-side) JavaScript, especially for things that can be done server-side, is even better yet. Remember: less random code running from random web sites makes technology better and far safer for everyone involved.

I run a few other servers to do a variety of tasks such as service hosting, authoritative DNS servers, DNS resolvers, e-mail "smarthost" relaying, and virtual hosting web sites.
